I think it's interesting to encourage grouping/teaming through hard to pass content. But what if there was more than just that what if your character had a skill to become a better team player? So they can have a separate level and exp for being in teams. The more damage you do, more damage you take, the more you heal others while in a team you gain exp for doing some. Eventually you hit certain team levels and gain certain benefits for it that appear when you're in a team.
Team Skills and tactical positioning: Skills that you can only use when teamed up and depending on the size can appear. Like tactical positioning. If this guy is standing there, the tank stands over there, and the healer is standing in a certain position the map grid appearing before everyone gains some kind of stat buff for it long as everyone stands in their respective places. You can have something called the "Hydra Formation", keep everyeone behind three tanks and everyone gets a protective buff from attacks. The formation requires 3 tanks so having certain number of roles in your party become crucial to use certain formation giving more of a reason on what number of what roles you pick. If you can't use the Hydra Formation maybe you can try the Hawk Formation that fits your types of members in your party.
