At level 50, even an unsubscribed player should be allowed to play an alt, if only to keep them playing the game. Being locked into only 1 character after maxing out levels is garraunteed to cause people to quit playing, and they're definitely not going to sub if there is no reason to play. If you limit that player to only the level 50, they will soon quit. So level 50 should unlock one alt character, in addition to the main level 50.
Taking this farther I think its pretty obvious that I really enjoyed playing the Warden character, and without it I wouldn't think twice about quitting. Its really that simple, I played Warden to level 50 and just switching to 1 alt without access to my level 50 ... I'd rather play practically any other mmo. I briefly enjoyed playing the Sentinel (level 30 something) and the tank (also level 30 something), but they are not my level 50 Warden. My favorite character needs options at 50: If thats an alternate character to play; easiest form of dual class frankly, or its the alternate class in addition to the level 50 Warden all is good. Right now however, when the Sub comes back its either/or ... I will soon again "quit" for another year while I wait for the Embers team to get their collective act together.
That 9th or 10th spell slot, could be a nice reward btw.
Driving people away does not convince them to sub to a game, and the Game is what happens at level 50. Right now the lack of level 50 dungeons is an issue for all existing players whom pushed through to the end, the raid is ... meh at best, face it this game is not ready for 5-10 big raid guilds (lacks the 20,000-100,000 player base). I get that the new wave of players which opening Steam will cause won't need those level 50 dungeons for awhile, so the quick fix is to allow any level 50 player to have +1 alt without the sub, and +1 for each 50....
