Supporter Skills & Subclass/Specialist

Live and die by the staff!!!

I'm curious if shields might be a viable option down the road to use as a support instead of a banner?
Unlikely. Being able to quickly identify which role someone is by their equipped weapons is important. If we give supporters shields (even if they are visually distinct in some way) that just muddies the water between defender and supporter identification.

Out of curiosity, why is quick role identification important? I know it is important in a PvP setting, but unfamiliar with the PvE reasoning.

It's a subtle thing - but I feel as though having a quick way to identify who is who can help in a number of ways. As a puller for example, if I can quickly identify who is the tank by visuals alone then I know who to run to on my way back without having to reference ui/names/group window/etc.

That's unfortunate. I guess they will have to determine my role from my staff or crossbow.
Maybe we could look at giving them something else possibly then? Just have never been a fan of the banner look

The banner is not the only item we plan to allow you to equip there. The banner is just one variation of a "stat stick" which could be anything. Maybe a torch, a mug, a book, a rock, a sock full of nickels, you get the gist (hopefully!).

That's definitely good to hear. Lol I'll take any of the mentioned items over the banner anyday, especially that sock full of nickels ;-)

Wont this be easier once we start getting different visuals on armor and weapons? I know at the moment it may be a little difficult to tell people apart because everyone looks the same. But this will eventually change I assume?

I'm not sure what you are asking here? Right now you should be able to immediately tell which base role someone is just by what weapons & stance they are in. The same goes for humanoid NPCs.

to a degree yes. But I was getting at the visual graphics of items and armor in game. Currently everything looks the same. No real difference in armor graphics aside from color. Weapons as well all look the same as every other weapon of that type.
I guess my point I am trying to get at is like in EQ you could run by someone and see their armor or weapons and know they had certain gear. Will this be something we can expect to eventually see in Embers? For example the thumbnail on items does not match the graphic of said items once equipped, will this get fleshed out more as we get further along in development?

My apologies for not being as specific as I should of been in my first post about this. To sum up what I was trying to get at, as of right now all defenders look the same, as do strikers and supporters.

We have a limited set of visuals for armor right now which will continue to expand. There are quite a lot of variants that haven't entered the system yet so expect things to get more diverse as people level.

That's good to hear. Variety and versatility are what people need

They only Supporter I could see having any form of a shield, be it physical or magical, would be the Sentinel since they pull some characteristics from the Defender.

I don't care what they get as long as it's an option other than the banner lol

Yes, that was what I was thinking. The possibility of having a Paladin or Templar style build with a shield. Will have to settle for the 'Mug of ale' priest build instead. :)

I support the identifying a class role by its weapons. However, what if you made an item that functioned like a small buckler?

Strikers could have a parrying dagger like a swordbreaker, which could just provide a little parry and maybe AC as well. Supporter could have a type of defensive staff like a cane with a bonus to riposte (snag their sword arm with the crook?).

It’s not personally something I want, but it could provide others with more defensive options without adding too much tankiness or betraying class identification at first glance.
