Prospecting refining failure rate

I'm only at level 2 prospecting so perhaps this will improve with levels, but refining 7 ore into ingots yielded only 3 successes. Of the 11 ores I collected in the previous hour, I was able to refine 7 successfully. This is NOT a complaint, but feedback that (to me) it feels like the failure rate may be a bit higher than desirable.

Just following up on this one as I pushed my skill to 15 prospecting over the weekend. The failure rate for refining ore into a metal bar definitely goes down as your skill goes up. At 14 prospecting skill I was able to process 19/20 of the copper ore I had collected in a round. 15 Tin ore yielded only 9 tin bars, or just over 30% failure rate. Given that we can fail the prospecting step itself (getting junk from mining the node) and then fail the refining process, this still feels high. Maybe I'm alone in this sentiment.
If mining nodes always yielded usable ore, I think it would hurt a lot less to fail refining this much. Or maybe have the possibility for more than one gather attempt at a node?

The rate of failure (for both mining and refining) is high the closer a character is to the lower end of the skill threshold, yes. I have experienced the same. When I got to Prospector 20 or so, all of this dwindled for tin and copper (but did not subside). I think this is intended.

Not that I agree or disagree, just that progression in this game is typically intended to be a bit more challenging than the standard for this genre.
 
I was surprised to see the failure rate so high for prospecting, after the decent rate I had previously as Hunter. It does seem harsh given how few nodes are available in the level 1 area for doing the initial refining quest compared to huge numbers of animals to skin for decent success rate. I would kind of expect the opposite, as the refining the large number of available hides should fail more than the few available ore nodes.
