1. Unreal 2021: Display stuttering
Since the upgrade to Unity 2021 I'm experiencing a new kind of graphics lag. It's like time is frequently reversed in short bursts and the game client reverts back to a previous display state. Examples:
- When walking forward, the character is suddenly moved backwards a small amount.
- When viewing the hotbar during a fight, the cooldown marker that circles over the icon is suddenly moved back a small amount.
- When moving the camera (at stand-still), the camera suddenly moves a small amount in the "other" direction (i.e. opposite direction of mouse movement).

Sometimes it happens several times per second and sometimes it doesn't happen at all. Could it be related to network latency that is handled differently by the new Unity engine?

Computer: MacBook Air M1 8 GB
Game build: It was happening both with the Intel version and with the Apple silicon version.
Location: Europe, Sweden

2. Unity 2021: Upscaling looks better with Unity 2021
It could be placebo, but I think the upscaling looks better with the new version.
I'm playing at 2050x858 on an ultra wide 3440x1440 monitor and it's looking quite good for being upscaled. And that's slightly less amount of pixels compared to full HD which I was using with my old monitor.

3. Apple silicon build:
Only tried it briefly today. Working mostly good except that the game crashed 2 times (spinning ball forever, no error message). It crashed during gameplay.

Heya @Aeldar thanks for testing the mac clients! A couple of thoughts/requests on the stuttering you are experiencing:
  • does this happen when you set shadow distance to 0%?
  • does this happen if you run at lower resolutions? (1080p for example)
I too occasionally experience these issues but they only typically show up right after login and clear up quickly. Given that you're running a lower spec mac with only 8gb of RAM I would be curious as to what your video settings are configured as. But try the above two things and let me know if that clears anything up - your answers might give us some insight.

Hello Undone,

Yes, it happens also when shadow distance is 0%.
It also happens when running lower resolution (e.g. 1024x768). Tested with a number of resolutions, same issue. Tried windowed mode and fullscreen (same issue).

It happens when all settings are at the lowest (including view distance at 0%). It happens more if view distance higher (e.g. 15%).

It's understandable there there is graphics lag given the computer I'm using, but the issue is more how the graphics lag is displayed.

Here is an attempt to explain it in words :)

Frame 1: Displayed
Frame 2: Displayed
Frame 3: Displayed
Frame 4: Lags out, but instead of showing frame 3 (i.e. freezing) it's showing frame 2 which results in what could be described as a "bounce".
Frame 5: Displaying frame 5, i.e. there is an extra large gap between frame 2 and frame 5.

I've recorded a slow-motion movie where the issue is clearly seen. Let me know if you want me to post it somewhere and link it here.

I found a location in the game where I experience it happens more than other locations: the first crossroad south of the gate in South Newhaven.

How I performed the test: Character is standing still with a signpost close by (ca 5 meters in front of the character). I use the left mouse key to move the camera around so that the signpost is moving back and forth between the character and the camera.

PS: Is there an Apple Silicon build this week? I checked the patch notes but didn't see info on that.

I think I know what you are experiencing - which is a rendering bug in Unity that I'm still trying to isolate so I can submit to them. Seems to be a hangup with macOS and batching causing frame hitching - it's really bad in dryfoot when looking at the big castle thing. No apple silicon build this week I didn't have time to pump one out.
