This month the dev team has been almost entirely focused on the Steam release. This includes modifying our build & deployment pipelines, adding a purchase flow for subscriptions, adding account linking to our back end, and getting the application through Steam's approval process. This patch also includes a few bug fixes, QoL updates, and design improvements.
The goal of the Steam "soft launch" is to allow us the time to work through any major issues with the game, purchases, or accounts before we start deprecating legacy login & download flows. By this time next month our standalone launcher will no longer allow you to download the latest version of the game; Steam will be required to download all future patches. Finally, at some point within the next few weeks legacy logins using the forum username & password will no longer be considered a subscriber in game. In order for the client to recognize an active subscription you must be logged in via Steam credentials and have an active subscription (which is purchased in game and managed through Steam).
For further details on why we are embarking on this transition please read our most recent press release.
New Stuff
Resource Node Nameplates
To improve the visibility of resource nodes we have added nameplates for nodes corresponding to your professions. Our goal is to both improve the visibility for new players, and allow experienced players to increase the visual fidelity of their game (via increasing the vegetation density) without losing node visibility. These nameplates operate through the same system as regular nameplates which means they can be toggled on/off with a keybind, are hidden when the UI is hidden, and have a toggle in the options to disable them entirely for resource nodes.
Keep in mind that these will only show for nodes that correspond to one of your character's gathering professions. Some node names may be quite long which may require us to add some data so that we can abbreviate the display name in the future (i.e. for the above picture, remove "Plant"); but for now enjoy the absurdly long names
Non-Subscriber Upgrade
The past few months everyone who has logged in has been able to enjoy our subscriber benefits at no cost (for the why see here). Now that we are spinning up a new payment provider it becomes necessary to make these benefits part of a monthly subscription once again. And while we strive to make the Embers Adrift experience enjoyable for all of our customers regardless of your subscription status, we also recognize the need to broaden our appeal to those who are not currently supporting us. For non-subscribers we have expanded the active character limit from one to two; this means that if your subscription lapses you can have two active characters to enjoy.
We would also like to remind everyone that the decision of which characters to activate is permanent until a subscription is activated, at which point all character slots are unlocked. However, you do not have to select both characters at the same time. You activate one character alone, and activate a second character at some point in the future. Each individual activation is locked in until your next subscription purchase.
Another things to note is that in order for your account to be recognized as a subscriber you must log in with Steam credentials and have an active subscription. If you login with the legacy method (forum username & password) then you will have to activate characters and lose subscriber benefits until you login with your Steam credentials again. Note that this only applies after we deprecate legacy logins as subscribers within the next few weeks.
STEAM
Today we are "soft launching" on Steam! In other words: Embers Adrift is once again available for sale! During this transition period (1-2 weeks) we will continue to support both legacy login (forum username & password) and Steam credentials. In order to redeem your steam key and/or access your current characters via your Steam credentials you will want follow the instructions outlined here.

Some quick points to note:
- At some point in the near future (1-2 weeks) legacy logins will no longer have subscriber perks. You will need to login with your Steam credentials to activate a subscription.
- It is worth re-emphasizing that ALL legacy logins will lose subscriber perks within 1-2 weeks. This grace period should give you plenty of time to get your keys redeemed and account linking sorted.
- When redeemed, your Steam key will grant you 2 weeks of subscription time to cover the above mentioned grace period.
- All new purchases will also come with 2 weeks of subscription perks.
- This month's patch is the last major patch that will be delivered through the Embers Adrift launcher. All future patches will be delivered via Steam only. (this includes the Linux client)
- The Embers Adrift Soundtrack should also be available on Steam some time next week.
- New user registration for these forums has been disabled.
Coming Up...
With Steam mostly behind us there are two primary focuses for the upcoming weeks:
- Unity 6 upgrade (engine improvements, but fixes, etc)
