I will say (as a new player myself) I have been very surprised by how many people are running around. It doesn't feel like a low population at all, and I've had no problem finding groups (currently level 13 I think).
Personally I love the night time and I think lighting the torch and running around is super pretty. Without a light source I'd completely hate night time but I think having a light source that you can easily enable/disable with a single key stroke without having to manually unequip/equip an item...
